The “patient” was a 12 year old young girl traveling with her mother, neither spoke English. A flight attendant acted as my interpreter.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The only clear story I could get from the translation was the concern of the mother that her daughter had a fever. Trying to confirm that the only concern of the mother was a fever, I was a bit animated in my attempt to confirm the only concern was that her daughter had a fever. When the word fever was spoken loudly, several of the passengers near by got out of their seats and moved away. Remember, this was the season of H1N1. I realized I now had more to deal with than the “ill patient”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At that time, the nation seemed to be on the brink of a vaccine crisis for the H1N1 condition. Production delays led to shortages, people were confused about who needed that vaccine as well as the regular annual flu shots. Health agencies could have been clearer in there messaging to the public. The quick manufacturing process led to uncertainty about its safety and effectiveness and resurrected concerns about vaccine safety in general.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Research continues to document the benefits of other vaccines, in particular, two problems that plaque older people, pneumonia and shingles. However, immunization rates for adults still lag far behind those for children. Many physicians still under value vaccinations for adults. Adult patients need to take the lead in talking with their healthcare provider about the shots they need; be the CEO of your health.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This season, there will be just one influenza vaccine for almost everyone older than 6 months. It is best to get vaccinated soon after the vaccine become available, &lt;strong&gt;usually in September&lt;/strong&gt;, so you will have protection for the whole flu season. In June 2010 the CDC reported preliminary results that showed that for every 1 million vaccinations, there was less than one extra case of Guillain-Barre syndrome.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Additional studies found that people who get the shot have a strong immune response to it, which indicates that the vaccine provides substantial protection against the virus. People who regularly get vaccinated against the flu reduce their risk of developing potentially deadly complications from the disease.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Shingles&lt;/strong&gt;, a recurrence of the chicken-pox virus can trigger rashes and nerve pain. Even though the vaccine has been available since 2006, it is reported that only 2 to 7 percent of eligible adults have had the shot. People 60 years and older and who don’t have a weakened immune system should discuss this vaccination with their healthcare provider.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Pneumoccus bacterium&lt;/strong&gt; which causes a serious form of pneumonia, has a better record with about 35 percent of adults over 65 not being vaccinated. Younger people at high risk of developing respiratory problems are candidates for this vaccination, since complications from the infection hospitalize or kills a significant number of people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Are you up-to-date on your vaccines? The following vaccines can cause mild side effects, including redness, soreness or rashes around the injection site. Occasionally, more serious side effects might occur, especially in those who experience an allergic reaction. Vaccines recommended by the CDC have a very good safety record, and all offer benefits that far outweigh any risks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You should review your vaccination history with your healthcare provider. The vaccines to be addressed should include the following;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;- Hepatitis A and B&lt;br /&gt;- Chicken pox&lt;br /&gt;- Human Papillomavirus&lt;br /&gt;- Influenza&lt;br /&gt;- Measles, Mumps and Rubella&lt;br /&gt;- Meningitis&lt;br /&gt;- Pneumonia&lt;br /&gt;- Shingles&lt;br /&gt;- Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After a thorough physical examination I explained to the mother, that her daughter was fine and had NO fever. As this information was translated by the flight attendant, the surrounding passengers smiled and returned to their seats. The Captain wanted to know the status of the passenger, as if I had any concerns of H1N1, we all would be quarantined on the airplane for 4 hours, once we landed at our destination.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My diagnosis confirmed as I noted the young girl was wildly running around the airport while we waited patiently for our luggage. My wife and I enjoyed the bottle of Champagne presented to me, by the Captain, as we deplaned. Bars and coffee shops had their TV’s tuned to the soccer matches and enthusiastic patrons went wild when their favorite team scoured. Walking between terminals in Louisville, KY, taxicab drivers waiting in their parking lot, had their radios blaring the game and several were kicking a soccer ball around while they waited for a fare.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One could not help but notice how fit the players appeared, hardly an ounce of body fat, even when they were lying on the ground, feigning an injury. This world event has had an interested aftermath for certain individuals. They have become inspired to “get into shape again.” Great news, but what should you know before starting your exercise program. First I would caution, get in shape to play rather then playing to et in shape.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yes exercise is good for your health, every health practitioner may tell you to get more exercise, as there are significant benefits for you. The benefits of exercise include: decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and stroke; decreased risk of colon and breast cancer; decreased risk of diabetes, osteoporosis; and decreased risk of depression and dementia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Exercise also improves your metabolic processes; improves movement of joints and muscles; improves sense of well-being and improves strength and endurance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Perhaps the most important aspect for success in exercising is your motivation. If you align your interest in exercising with your purpose in life, you are much more likely to be successful in maintaining a regular exercise program and receive the benefits you not only deserve, but you desire.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Exercise can be thought of as a menu rather than a diet. Choose physical activities that you enjoy personally, sports, dancing, or swimming. Develop an interest or hobby that requires physical activity. Plan to exercise with friends. You can adopt routines such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking to the store for milk or parking your car at the farthest end of the parking lot when you are shopping. Use an accountability process to confirm your progress. Pedometers worn daily with a 10,000 step target, are an accurate way of accessing your cardio exercise.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What is the best exercise for you? It is the exercise you enjoy and the one you will do. However, an exercise program that includes aerobic exercises, strength, flexibility, and balanced training provide you with the best health benefits.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Aerobic exercise is any activity that makes your muscles use oxygen. You heart has to work harder to get oxygen to your muscles and this makes your heart stronger. Aerobic exercises decrease your blood pressure and your resting heart rate which puts less stress on your heart. This type of exercise will also increase your “good” cholesterol (HDL), burn more calories and help you lose weight. Individuals who complete 10,000 steps a day for a year, on average will lose between 11 and 14 pounds.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Strength or resistance training builds muscle strength, helps maintain bone density and associated with a lower risk of heart disease. Isometric training, pushing against a wall, does not lengthen the muscle but eccentric contractions, the down phase as weights are lowered, do. Concentric contractions, a bicep curl, shorten the muscle. Strength or resistance training can benefit individuals well into their 90s.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Flexibility or stretching can be particularly useful for yore back. This can prevent cramps, stiffness and injuries and improve joint movement. Flexibility practices such as YOGA, Tai chi and Pilates also involve breathing techniques that reduce stress.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Using balance accessories such as balls, Bosu ball or a balance board will strengthen your core muscles and help prevent injuries particularly from falls.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are three ways to mea sue your exercise: frequency, duration and intensity. Try to get 150 minutes of exercise per week to enjoy the benefits for regular exercise. A goal is to exercise at least 30 minutes at a time. The intensity provides a good measure of your aerobic exercise. Maintaining your target heart rate for 20 minutes is a good goal. Your target heart rate can be calculated my figuring out your maximum heart rate. (MHR)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;MHR = 220 – age. An example, if you are 40 years old your MHR would be 180 beats per minute. (220 – 40 = 180). Your target rate should be between 60 to 80 percent of your MHR. ( 60 % of 180 = 108, and 80% of 180 = 153) During your exercise, if you heart rate is below 108, you need to speed up and if your heart rate is greater than 153 you need to slow down.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don’t forget to cool down after your exercise and let your heart rate and breathing return to a normal level. When I approached the window and started to hand over the change for my coffee, the attendant stopped me and said my order had already been paid.  Bemused, I asked her how that could be.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"The customer ahead of you does this every morning. He pays for his coffee and then leaves behind enough for the next customer. It's his way of brightening up someone's morning I guess."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I thought that was a great idea and handed over my money. Shocking? Not really when you consider the lifestyle choices we make during the fall and winter - heartier meals, less outdoor activities, holiday parties. So how do you avoid the sticker shock of that mid January weigh in? One word: PREVENTION. Below are tips for avoiding holiday weight gain:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Eat before you go. This is the number one rule for grocery shopping and holiday parties. Those cheesy puff balls on greasy crackers will look a lot less appetizing when you’ve had a light salmon and rice dinner beforehand.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Remember this: Eggnog is only for the severely malnourished. Never, ever, drink it. If you become seduced by its sweet scent of cinnamon and nutmeg, stuff your nostrils with the cheese doodles. One glass of eggnog is about 400 calories, 56% saturated fat. Add some rum and holiday fruitcake and you have the daily caloric intake of a small village. Just say no. If you absolutely &lt;em&gt;must&lt;/em&gt; - insist on the "light" version.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. There’s going to be a lot of sofa surfing at Grandma’s over the holidays, so get your gym time in now. Add five extra workouts to your routine this month. Whatever works for you: schedule them in your daytimer and stick to it. As a certified pandemic planner, I have over the past week, experienced an increase in the number of H1N1 inquiries from those I know both personally and professionally.And so with this in mind, here’s a bit of information that I hope you will find helpful in clarifying how best to take preventative measures.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Please recognize that this is information intended to be helpful only, and that it is not medical advice.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Please note: on the issue of utility masks, most N95 respirators are designed to filter 95% particulates of 0.3µ; the size of H1N1 virus is about 0.1µ. Hence, dependence on N95 to protect against H1N1 is like protecting against rain with an umbrella made of mosquito net.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tamiflu does not kill the virus. It is a protocol that can be used in prophylaxis and for treatment upon the diagnosis of a physician. It prevents H1N1 from further proliferation until such time as the virus limits itself, usually about 1-2 weeks (its natural cycle). H1N1, like other Influenza A viruses, only infects the upper respiratory tract and proliferates there. The portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/ throat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to not come into contact with H1N1, despite every precaution you may take. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as preventing any proliferation of the virus.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, you can take a few simple steps to reduce your risk of illness, and to prevent proliferation. They include:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Frequent hand-washing including the use of an antiseptic cleanser such as Purell.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2 "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist the temptation to touch any part of your face.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use a recognized mouthwash if you don't enjoy salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat or nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Gargling is a simple, inexpensive, and proven preventative method.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Similarly, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. Not everybody may be good at using a Neti pot (a more holistic approach to clean nasal cavities), but blowing the nose once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in reducing virons.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5. Maintain a healthy diet and boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (citrus fruits). If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;6. Drink plenty of warm liquids. Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;7. Exercise and get lots of sleep. A commitment to exercise and lots of sleep is a healthy practice at all times, but especially when you are wanting to boost immunity. Don’t compromise on this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;8.  Vaccination. There is good reason to consider vaccination, whether you are at high risk or not. Time to reach for the sunshine in a bottle, and no, I don't mean the self tanner left over from last year's Cancun vacation. Vitamin D is in the headlines, enjoying its own day in the sun, and for good reason.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;The industrial revolution has led us indoors and the digital age has kept us there, in front of our Wiis and laptops. Sunscreen and northern climes contribute even more to a potential vitamin D deficiency scenario. For decades, Vitamin D has been included in multivitamin supplements, but at a level (400 IU) that many researchers and scientists now feel may be below optimal. Why? Because new research shows that many body tissues have receptors for vitamin D and getting sufficient levels of it could substantially reduce the risk for breast, colon, prostate and ovarian cancers (&lt;em&gt;2005 Study - American Journal of Public Health&lt;/em&gt;). Some smaller studies theorize that vitamin D has cardiovascular benefits and may help protect against some autoimmune conditions. In fact, recent research suggests that vitamin D may be just as important at helping prevent that winter cold and flu as vitamin C, due to its importance in the regulation of Th1 cells, an important group of immune cells. And we already know how &lt;em&gt;vital&lt;/em&gt; vitamin D is in helping the body to absorb calcium to build strong bones and muscles and prevent osteoporosis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Vitamin D is a hormone initially manufactured in the epidermis by exposure to ultraviolet B rays. Unfortunately, other than getting 10 to 15 minutes of sunshine three times a week (without sunscreen), it is difficult to get sufficient amounts from our typical north American diets. It does not occur naturally in most foods (no, not even milk - it is an additive.) Fish high in fat and fatty acids, like salmon, tuna and mackerel all contain vitamin D but unless you are having sushi for lunch everyday, you are likely not getting your share. Vitamin D supplements are relatively inexpensive compared to other vitamins and supplements and can be obtained in liquid or tablet form.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;So, how much is enough? Well, there is a cry from some medical and research communities to raise the daily recommended value from 400 IUs to 800 or even 1,000 IUs in order to experience the greatest benefit. The National Academy of Sciences has set 2,000 IU daily as the tolerable upper limit. Vitamin D can have some food and drug interactions. Check with your physician to get the best advice for you and don't jump on the bandwagon if you are taking antacids and magnesium or if you have heart disease and are on medications for it. Additionally, those with kidney disease or lupus should not be taking vitamin D supplements without their doctor's direction.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The recommended daily value will be different for everyone. It will be affected by your health, environment, diet, even the pigment of your skin. However, one thing that is difficult to ignore is that while our lifestyles have changed dramatically over the last few decades, taking us of the sun into cubicles and cars, the recommended daily values for vitamins and minerals hasn't kept pace. All prepackaged foods are required to provide a Nutrition Facts label for the product and even though you might need your bi-focals to read it, it is well worth the effort.    Pay particular attention to those food products that you consume regularly (&lt;em&gt;bread, margarine, cereal, sauces, canned or boxed soups or dinner mixes&lt;/em&gt;) as well as snacks and drinks.  A low fat microwave popcorn might appear to be a wise snack choice, but not if the sodium content exceeds half your daily requirement!  And check out the labels on those sports drinks and juice boxes too.   Thinking about trying a new stuffing mix or condiment?  Read the label first.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First things first: "SERVING SIZE!"  To make an accurate assessment of just what the percentages on the label mean to you, look first at the serving size.  The manufacturer or producer chooses a serving "size" for their product by weight or portion or piece, and bases the nutritional facts you see on the label, on that exact serving size.    For snack items like chips or crackers, the serving size may be as little as four or six.   This can be problematic for those who prefer to eat portions more accurately resembling "half the bag" or the "whole box!"   Brush up on your times table if you tend to exceed the serving sizes.    While calories are important, especially in relation to serving sizes, they are still a simple measurement of energy.  Depending on your personal situation, a closer look at a product's saturated and trans fats, sodium, cholesterol and sugar levels will likely be more critical for your health.   If any one product is hitting 15 to 50% of your daily value in fat, sodium or carbohydrates, its probably time to rethink including it in your diet.   And if your vision is still good enough to read the fine print, glance over the ingredients section, noting red flags such as sugars,  syrups, modified or hydrogenated oils, and other baffling, tongue twisting ingredients and artificial flavours.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The "recommended daily value" is an important gauge, but if you are suffering from high cholesterol or heart disease, ask your doc what her or his personal recommendation for you might be.   Sodium is not just a seasoning, it is also this year's HOT topic!  Many restaurant entrees are loaded with it as are pre-packaged "low fat" frozen or ready to serve meals.  (&lt;em&gt;They make up for the taste lost due to the reduced fat, by replacing it with salt.)&lt;/em&gt; The daily recommended value for sodium is about a teaspoon or 3500 mg.  If you sprinkle it on your salad at lunch and your chicken for dinner, better be careful about how much you are getting through other sources, (canned soups, sauces..) especially if you have high blood pressure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What about foods that aren't packaged and are instead delivered to your table or purchased at a drive through window?  The internet is loaded with sites that can help you make wise choices. I recommend spending  time here reviewing some of your favorite restaurant menu items.  Compare the nutrition facts label of a serving of McNuggets, to a cheeseburger, or double cheeseburger.  You may be shocked.  But you will be informed.  And armed with information, we can all make better choices. (&lt;em&gt;Read below for more detail&lt;/em&gt;.) A number of the team members have been discussing the "awareness" they now have about how many steps they are taking each day.   They are chatting over the water cooler or on email about how far they are parking from the airport terminal or the office or supermarket to increase their daily step count.   I believe this "shift" in awareness is essential to achieving the goal of 10,000 steps a day (and more!)  We've become accustomed to driving everywhere.  We get frustrated if we don't get the parking spot right in front of the video store, we jockey for position in front of the school so that our kids walk less than 25 steps to the front door.   Heck, we even try to get the closest spot in front of the gym where we go to work out!   Take this challenge for the next 21 days:  Wherever you go - park as far from the entrance as you can, give your kids the opportunity for a brisk walk by dropping them at the corner of the block, walk to the mailbox, do a lap around your office building before going in.   Below is a copy of the "Health Tip of the Week" from Shane Bilsborough at Global Corporate Challenge.  Shane has some surprising revelations and statistics about just how many steps we've lost over the centuries:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;"For many of us, the seated nature of our jobs has the potential to slowly decrease our daily energy expenditure. In fact, this rapid decline in activity has ensured the average office person now takes about 3,500 walking steps a day. We know that estimates of hunter-gatherer walking steps were around 30,000, while some like the current day hunter-gatherers, the Masai, are in the vicinity of 50,000 - 60,000. Records of activity levels during the 15th century show 15km (9mi) or 23,500 daily walking steps and they remained very high until the 1950's. The level of chronic disease facing today's Western society was virtually absent until the 1900's then tracking upward in direct relation to declining physical activity. Why is there an ongoing debate on the necessity of addressing the wellness of workers when there seems to be ample evidence that organizations that create a positive work environment are more successful?"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;Health Promotion Programs at Work: A Frivolous Cost or a Sound Investment? Conference Board of Canada October 2002&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Good question. Research indicates that the reason why many corporations don't adopt a corporate wellness program is because of the &lt;em&gt;fear&lt;/em&gt; of the resources (time and money) that it will consume. But consider these statistics:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Canada Life in Toronto showed a return on investment of $3.40 on each corporate dollar invested on reduced turnover, productivity gains and decreased medical claims;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For $30 per person, the Bank of America conducted a health promotion program for retirees. Insurance claims were reduced by an average of $164 per year while costs for the control group increased by $15!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BC Hydro employees enrolled in a work-sponsored fitness program had a turnover rate of 3.5% compared with the company average of 10.3%.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Prudential Insurance reports that the company's major medical costs dropped from $574 to $312 for each participant in their wellness program.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Coors Brewing Co. reported that for each dollar spent on their Corporate Wellness Program, they saw a $5.50 return, and the employees who participated reduced their absentee rate by 18%.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Corporate Wellness Programs are showing an ROI (return on investment) of anywhere between $3 to $10 for every dollar invested. Employees are getting healthier, stronger, smarter and they are more committed, more productive, less stressed and report a healthier work/life balance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So is it worth the extra time and effort? We've joined the Global Corporate Challenge (&lt;a href="http://www.gettheworldmoving.com/"&gt;http://www.gettheworldmoving.com/&lt;/a&gt;) along with almost 8500 teams and nearly 60,000 people from countries across the world. Global Corporate Challenge is a 125 day health and wellbeing program that encourages employees, and workplaces to become, and stay active. Companies develop teams of seven and each teammember receives an embossed backpack with lots of goodies inside including two pedometers. Participants wear their pedometer everyday and log their steps on the GCC website the next day. Teams encourage and support each other and the website is an incredible virtual journey logging team's steps across the globe, complete with stunning pictures and facts on the foods and culture of the locations traversed. This year's global challenge began on May 21. The goal of the challenge is to encourage individuals and in this particular challenge, often sedentary corporate employees to get up, get moving, and develop life long healthy habits. It gave me the opportunity to settle in and "people watch" for a bit and I noticed that a number of my seatmates were quite young, students probably, looking for a few days of fun before beginning their summer jobs. I thought about what kind of work they would be engaging in over the months ahead. Some would perhaps be working in their chosen field while others would be entering an occupation or organization completely unfamiliar.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is &lt;em&gt;North American Occupational Safety and Health Week&lt;/em&gt; (NAOSH) and the theme this year is "Making it home safely at the end of each work week". I pondered the challenges and responsibilities that come with hiring a student. For many students, this may be their first "real" job and the pressure and anxiety is enormous. But for the business, the pressure may be equal considering the risk of a new hire and the legislation governing health and safety. What experienced workers may take for granted: mopping up spills immediately, washing hands, the correct lifting of boxes, many new and young workers will need to be taught. Experienced or seasoned employees may become complacent in their attention to health and safety but we need to remind them to be aware of the importance of safety when training or mentoring youth.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Remembering that a team is only as strong as it's weakest link, taking some time with new employees to emphasize the company's commitment to health and safety, outlining individual responsibilities, and making safety procedures available and visible will contribute to the health and safety of all. In any occupation, taking time to stretch, making time for refreshment and reducing stress are important. Supervisory oversight is probably the most imporant factor, and encouraging new employees in the reporting of worksite hazards or injuries develops a personal responsibility mindset that will reduce liability and accidents. Chocolate in moderation can actually have health benefits for you. Chocolate is high in heart healthy flavenoids, it also contains essential trace elements and nutrients such as iron, calcium, and potassium as well as vitamins A, B1, C, D, and E. It can also produce antioxidants which help remove free radicals in the body, substances that have been shown to increase the effects of aging and certain cancers.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;Cocoa is one of the main ingredients in chocolate and is the highest natural source of magnesium which is beneficial for the cardiovascular system and in decreasing hypertension. Chocolate has also been shown to raise the body's "feel good" hormone, serotonin. Good dark chocolate that is high in cocoa solids (70% or more) is the best choice to feed that chocolate craving. As with anything, make sure your chocolate consumption is in moderation; be sure to balance your intake of calories by reducing them elsewhere if you choose to indulge. These sites are a great way to reconnect with, keep up to date with or make new contacts. LinkedIn can introduce new business contacts and promote awareness of your business to people outside of your current contact list. I put it out of my mind and chalked it up to lack of exercise. Walking to and from conference sessions I was giving that day, my breathing got worse. Given my obvious intelligence, professionalism and medical prowess, I responded to the situation in an entirely appropriate manner. It was this experience that when I finally addressed it (&lt;em&gt;thanks to the persistence of my loving wife)&lt;/em&gt; drove me to the realization that I had to lose weight, get in shape and take responsibility for my own health before it was too late. The paragraph above is now the first one in the preface to my book, &lt;em&gt;The Healthy CEO&lt;/em&gt;. Our safety and often that of our children riding in the car seats behind us, depends on our alertness and defensive driving skills.   A recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety provides evidence of the effects of cell phone use on injury crashes. IIHS revealed that drivers using phones are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves.  And in case you are thinking that those statistics apply only to certain age, gender or racial groups, think again.  There was no statistical difference between any of these groups.  Additionally, implementing hands free technology doesn't decrease the risk.  The bottom line is distraction - we need all pistons firing while we are at the wheel.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is some evidence to suggest that cell phone use is potentially harmful to our overall health, and particularly to the health of developing children. I encourage you to research more on this topic and talk about safe cell phone use with your kids. After taking great pains to get all the paper work in order, I presented for my interview. I made one small error in the process and this was not looked upon kindly by the Border officers. the problem was resolved by using my receptive communication skills. I acknowledged the speaker by maintaining eye contact, kept my body turned to the speaker and gave verbal cues and nods to show engagement. I resisted the temptation to prematurely frame my response ( Didn't interrupt). With the setting being outdoors in the Canadian Rockies at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, even the weatherman got it right. Weddings are always an interesting time to look at family of origin dynamics. We come into relationships with expectations and our own set of unwritten rules for what relationships should look like. Values play a major role in the success of long term relationships. I thought should I crack open the lap top and get some work done or just cool down?&lt;br /&gt;Next to the gate was a booth offering manicures. Some nights it's too warm, and others too cold. Chances are you aren't getting enough sleep. If you're under pressure or facing a deadline, sleep is likely the first thing you let fall by the wayside.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Yet sleep or lack of it, affects our performance in all areas of life. Reduced quality or quantity of sleep contributes to a significant lapse in productivity, alertness and cognititive ability, and increases the risk of injury due to falls, for example. It can also cause friction in relationships becuase of increased irritability and, in the case of some sleep disorders, secondhand sleep disturbance. He was surprised when he realized that he had a second degree sunburn on his arm and shoulder&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;He remarked "Well how did I get that? It was cloudy out." I asked him if he had put any sunscreen on before he drove. "No, I was in my car the whole time- I didn't think I would need it."&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;This is a common misconception about the sunburn. You CAN get a sunburn in your car, and you certainly can receive one when it's cloudy. Remember, that arm you stick out the window on your drive home is also at risk! &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are some sun facts for you!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;If you are outside or in your car for long periods of time between 10:00am and 4:00pm- you are at risk from the sun- even if it's cloudy. 50%-80% of the sun's rays go through the clouds and can reach swimmers at least one foot below the surface of the water!!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Check to see if any medications you take react with the sun- these can increase your chances of severe sunburn or even skin cancer&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Reflections of sunlight from water, snow and through car windows can cause sunburn- protect your skin with suntan lotion and your eyes with sunglasses&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Carry some aloe vera lotion and apply mosturizer 3 times a day to a burn- it will cool your skin down and aid in healing&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;Many people don't realize how quickly a burn can occur. A tan is the skin trying to shield itself from skin damage. Sure it may look pretty nice if you normally have pasty skin, but really you are aging your skin everytime you recieve a suntan. You've just entered the Capital Ex fairgrounds and temptation is all around you! Here are few tips to make your visit to the event a fun one!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Protect yourself from the sun- wear protective clothing and sunscreen- take a tube in your bag, and make sure to step inside every so often to cool yourself down&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Drink plenty of water- pack a small aluminum thermos- you can find really cool ones these days, and keep yourself hydrated&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Make sure you eat a good breakfast, a decent lunch, and try to resist filling up on all those sweets! Grab a steaming hot corn on the cob as a snack to keep your body going to enjoy all those rides and exhibits&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Pace yourself. Take time to stop and rest while you are walking around the grounds. It's okay to take a break&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Don't eat sweets and get on those rides immediately - I've seen the results of that- not pretty!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Wear comfortable shoes- no flip flops. Try something with some arch support, and tie your shoelaces- you don't want something catching on a ride!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;If you are going to listen to some of the bands, consider a pair of earplugs to dim the sound slightly- protecting your eardrums from permanent damage. Keys to effective conflict resolution include the following:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;finding the appropriate time; waiting for or even scheduling a time when there won't be distractions&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;focusing on areas where there is already agreement&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;assuming the best intentions from the other person in what is said and what they want for the relationship&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;managing negative emotions&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;practicing good communication skills&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;committing to a positive outcome for both&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;desiring to reconnect more than to "win" with a postrure that says "I can agree to disagree even if we don't come to see eye to eye"&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;deciding to forgive and move on if the best attempts at reconciliation fail&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;How are you at conflict management? Disagreement is inevitable. Few of us relish dealing with disagreements or the conflict that may ensue, but when relationships clash-and they will-having good conflict management skills can make all the difference between good resolution and emotional escalation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some CEOs have a hard time knowing how to deal with relational conflict in their personal lives. In business, it’s appropriate to compete: to outsmart and out-argue rivals. Dealing with conflict is about securing a “win”. However, when conflict arises in personal relationships, the goal needs to be “win-win”. It’s not easy for every CEO to shift gears and meet the demands of their personal relationships in this way. It requires a different skill set.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#cc0000;"&gt;Different Approaches To Conflict&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#6600cc;"&gt;Denial or Avoidance&lt;/span&gt;: Some people avoid conflict altogether. They tend to lack the communications skills necessary to promote mutual understanding in the first place. Preferring to keep everything pleasant on the surface, even if it means denying reality, which is entirely different from optimism, conflict avoiders would rather let issues go unresolved than risk having to deal with a potentially messy situation. You would rather pretend nothing was wrong than risk running into an obstacle that couldn’t be overcome. This lack of integrity will usually lead to resentment on the part of the person giving in and ultimately contributes nothing to resolving issues or staying relationally connected.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#990000;"&gt;Passive aggression&lt;/span&gt;- This is another form of avoidance, but it deflects rather than denies the issue. The passive-aggressive person might make someone ‘pay’ in subtle ways like giving them the ‘silent treatment,’ rolling their eyes, deliberately making the other person’s life difficult or using manipulation, such as taking on the role of the ‘victim’. If the other person isn’t aware of this dynamic, he or she might take undue responsibility for the entire problem or be tempted to drop the matter entirely in an effort to restore peace. If you want to begin by tackling your credit card debt, you may lay out the following action steps:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:10;"  &gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;  &lt;ol style="margin-top: 0in;" start="1" type="1"&gt;&lt;li class="MsoNormal" style=""&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:10;"  &gt;This evening I will gather all      of my credit card bills and calculate exactly how much I owe on each cared      and at what interest rate.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li class="MsoNormal" style=""&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:10;"  &gt;Tonight I will also check out a      reliable website such as Bankrate.com and compare the interest rates on my      cards to current rates offered by other credit card companies.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li class="MsoNormal" style=""&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:10;"  &gt;Tomorrow I will call my credit      card companies and ask for a reduction in my interest rates.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li class="MsoNormal" style=""&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:10;"  &gt;By the end of the month, I will      consolidate my debt-either by transferring my credit card balances to one      card with a lower interest rate or by taking out a line of credit to pay      all the credit card debt at once.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li class="MsoNormal" style=""&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:10;"  &gt;Every month I will make more      than the minimum payment on each card and make the largest payment on the      card with the highest interest rate. &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li class="MsoNormal" style=""&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:10;"  &gt;When paying for incidental      expenses such as clothes, restaurant meals, entertainment and house wares,      I will use cash or debit instead of credit.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li class="MsoNormal" style=""&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:10;"  &gt;Once I’ve paid off my credit      cards, I will keep one in my wallet for exceptional expenses and cut the      rest up.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:10;"  &gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;    &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:10;"  &gt;Every one of these actions steps, taken on its own, may seem too small to have any significant impact on your debt load; however, taken together, these actions can make a huge difference. &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:10;"  &gt;Try it today and let me know how you are doing!!&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; They look at themselves and say “man I really should get into shape” but in saying that, some of them expect results immediately.&lt;br /&gt;How do you set up healthy goals that are achievable?&lt;br /&gt;Well, one way is to:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="color:#000099;"&gt;Tailor Your Goals To Fit You&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; (not the other guy racing a marathon- unless you want to be in one!)&lt;br /&gt;For your goals to be meaningful, they should be tailored to your needs and personality. You could have the same larger goal-“I want to eat better” as someone else, but have slightly different smaller goals. Depending on where you’re at, eating better might mean less salt, more fiber, less eating on the run-or even eating more if you’re underweight. You may want to learn some new cooking methods or recipes, or research quick-but-healthy restaurants or shopping options-whichever best fits your lifestyle. Your goals might also be set within a tighter or broader time span.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When setting your goals, you need to be honest with yourself and introduce challenges while keeping the adjustments realistic. For example, the timeframe of a week is wise if you know you want to make significant lifestyle changes but aren’t sure what impact the changes will actually have. In a week, you can learn a lot about what works, what doesn’t and how to adjust the next set of goals accordingly. The next goal-setting session might cover a lengthier period given your new experiential sight. It was a great trip and I had a chance to visit my daughter and husband and their great kids.&lt;br /&gt;I was fortunate to experience several American traditions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Watching the home team the White Sox win at the U.S Cellular Park.&lt;br /&gt;2. Hotdogs are plentiful and still one of America’s favourite pastimes. You could smell the scent of juicy bratwurst, Italian and Kosher hotdogs in the air.&lt;br /&gt;3. In the Chicago tradition, everyone in the baseball park stands up from their seats once there is only 1 remaining out in the ninth inning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The other tradition I observed wasn’t the best one-that the statistics from the Center of Disease Control on the number of individuals that were overweight and obese were correct. I had everything in order. I was just about to enter the fast track lane when a first time flyer was directed in front of me. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;He was clueless to the intricacies of the new rules, and apparently deaf and unable to read. He held up the line and thought it was funny. I took a deep breath and tried to be patient but we really need an efficient system put in place at airport security, because even I have my limits! Now for a few days living my relationship wellness model with my wife.  Three observations:&lt;br /&gt;1.  All inclusive resorts encourage mindless, rather than mindful eating.&lt;br /&gt;2.  The obesity stats are truly reflective of what I am seeing on the beach.&lt;br /&gt;3.  It is amazing how parents have forgotten about the damage of UV rays to their children. &lt;br /&gt;On an hour walk on the beach today, literally thousands of children were playing in the sand, and only 11 kids had any kind of protective headwear. How much is too much to gamble?  A months income, a week, a day? I opted for something less than a days income.&lt;br /&gt;Hit the jackpot on my first $100.  Should I keep going?  No, after paying the withholding tax I headed back to tthe room to prepare for the next day.&lt;br /&gt;I also observed far too many people gambling on their health.  No I am just talking about over indulgence of food, not the "other indulgence"   Seem odd to me that many people seemed to have a handle on how much they would spend on gambling, but no limits on the calories. Boarding pass checked at least twice within ten feet and now I go through the doors where the security machines and staff are waiting.  But even though this is the "fast lane"  it is also the line for flyers needing assistance.  My laptop is out, shoes off and nothing in my pockets.  I have been here before.  However, it seems like almost everyone in front of me in the "fast line" is a first time flyer, laughing and joking at making the bells go off because they didn't pay attention to what goes on the belt. So I can't buy my way up the wait list in Canadian health care, but why can't I pay more for a truly fast line for frequent flyers who want this choice. Traveling through OHARE to speak at Vistage in Atlanta, I overheard several cell phone converstations, they are everywhere, rushing between gates in different terminals.  Without knowing who was on the other end of the conversation and not knowing what they were saying, in many cases my perception was that the call was not that pleasant, a relationship dealing with issues long distance.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;Why not travel with CATS!  When you call your significant other use the term CATS.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;C:  Crisises, deal with the crisises first. What ever is troubling deal with it first.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Verdana;"&gt;A:  Adoration, assuming you are still madly in love, do what you normally do when face to face.  Comment how much you adore them.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Verdana;"&gt;T:  Talk, make sure there is enough time to talk.  Some couple need a lot of time to just talk, so make sure you have enough time before you need to hang up.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Verdana;"&gt;S: Sweet goodbyes, never end the call without sweet goodbyes.  Without seeing the body language we can misinterpret comments that leave doubts.
